Happy Book Birthday to The Memory of Butterflies
Many of you saw my posts over the past year as I wrote this novel, The Memory of Butterflies. You heard about Hannah Cooper, the fictional protagonist, and how I cried a lot as I wrote her story. All that crying while writing was an unusual experience for me, and one that I'll never forget. I hope readers will find also Hannah's story emotional and moving. But I know that what moves some people emotionally, may not move others. Likewise, an anecdote that someone finds hilarious may simply mystify someone else. It's because, like the author crafting the book, the reader brings their own set of experiences, needs and interests to the book they are reading.
The Memory of Butterflies is fiction, of course, as are the characters and many of the places I mention in the story. As with the writing of any book, the author contributes bits and pieces of their own life and experience to their novels. I contributed my love of pottery-making, my love of the woods and mysterious creeks, of private people who tend toward reclusiveness and who appreciate the quiet songs of nature more than social media and the modern world, and assorted snippets of real-life stories and experiences that have lodged themselves in my brain over my many, many years on this earth and somehow jump out and show up on the pages as I'm writing.
I created my first ever book trailer for this novel. These people are so strongly in my mind that I felt driven to do this. I hope you'll enjoy it.
